“To embrace the unembraceable is impossible” — this phrase describes Crete better than any other. The island is vast, diverse, and full of treasures: from monasteries to gorges, from ancient towns to mysterious bays. But it’s precisely on this individual excursion that you have the unique chance to get a vivid, rich impression of two regions — Heraklion and Rethymno — in a single day, crossing the island from north to south and discovering the most colourful kaleidoscope of Cretan nature and culture.
Journey programme
The journey begins with a scenic drive through the island’s southern areas. We’ll visit Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where you can watch eagles in flight — a stunning sight against a backdrop of rugged mountain scenery.
Next we’ll stop at one of Crete’s most beautiful viewpoints, overlooking the famous Preveli palm forest — a must for photos.
We’ll visit the Holy Stavropegic Patriarchal Monastery of Preveli, home to a miraculous cross containing a fragment of the True Cross. This place, filled with spiritual power, is known for countless healings and miraculous stories.
Then we descend to the Libyan Sea and head to Damnoni Beach — the water here is striking for its clarity and rich turquoise colour. Swimming and relaxing on the beach await.
Lunch — at a traditional Cretan taverna with panoramic sea views. Here you can try the best of Cretan cuisine and, perhaps, work up the courage to taste snails, a traditional delicacy.
On the way back we’ll pass through Kotsifou Gorge, ending the day in the cosy, romantic town of Rethymno. It’s a pleasure to stroll the old town’s streets, feel the Venetian influence, have a coffee by the harbour, and reflect on a full day.
